In June, NOPJF passed an important milestone in our support of the NOPD’s Recruiting efforts by driving the 1,750th completed recruit application to NOPD so far this year. While NOPJF does not hire NOPD Officers, we are proud of our work to attract qualified candidates to NOPD. Since 2012, NOPJF has driven over 45,000 applications to NOPD as part of our efforts to overhaul and modernize the NOPD hiring process. Under our current agreement with NOPD and in accordance with the Consent Decree, 25% of applicants were multilingual, 60% have college experience, and 20% previously or currently serve their country in the armed forces.
When NOPJF began this effort, NOPD was operating with a paper application and a lengthy hiring process that spanned the better part of a year. Today, our public-private partnership has resulted in applicants applying online at the joinNOPD.org website and, through nationwide testing, taking the civil service exam from anywhere in the country. Additionally, working with the Consent Decree monitoring team, the NOPD Recruitment Unit is in compliance with the Decree. The revamped process ensures NOPD has the ability to hire the best applicants in a competitive recruiting environment.
In 2023, NOPD has significantly exceeded last year’s hiring and is on track for an extremely robust class to launch on July 24, with 11 recruits already hired and a pipeline of 70+ applicants working their way through the process more than a month before the class launches.
Our unwavering commitment to public safety also includes support for the individual districts and units, advanced training and tuition assistance, personal protective equipment for high-risk situations, the creation and fiscal management of the NOPD Tragedy Fund, Mardi Gras and other event support throughout the year as well as providing consulting support for the NOPD and its officers and staff with their special projects and individual policing needs.
We are proud of what our partnership has accomplished and look forward to seeing you at our Stake Out for Justice luncheon at the beautiful Sheraton Hotel on October 4.
