Stake Out for Justice 2016 Presented by First NBC
The New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation hosted its exclusive fundraiser of the year, the annual Stake Out for Justice Luncheon, on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at the beautiful Sheraton New Orleans Hotel. Not only did many members of the law enforcement community attend, giving guests an excellent opportunity to meet the men and women who help the Superintendent carry out his vision, but more than 500 business leaders and community partners were in attendance as well.
This fundraiser is crucial to the continued operation of the NOPJF, which is a critical avenue for the community to support a modern, effective, and efficient police force in our city. Thank you to those who joined the fight against crime by supporting the NOPJF at our Stake Out for Justice Luncheon where you shared a conversation over a meal with your fellow business, political, and community leaders who are also invested in the success of this effort.
The New Orleans Police & Justice Foundation is the only nonprofit organization exclusively dedicating its support to the New Orleans Police Department. The NOPJF provides the equipment, training and technology my officers need to fight crime and make New Orleans a safer place to live, work and visit.
Keynote Speaker
This year’s keynote speaker was Chuck Wexler, Chief Executive of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF), a national membership organization of police executives headquartered in Washington, D.C. that focuses on improving policing and advancing professionalism by fostering debate, research and an openness to challenging traditional police practices. Each year, the NOPD (with the support of the NOPJF) sends promising leaders within the NOPD to PERF training; Superintendent Michael Harrison is a PERF graduate. Mr. Wexler’s remarks will provide insight into the direction of successful law enforcement agencies – like the NOPD – in the United States.

Corporate Responsibility Award: Hermes Beyond the Parade
Accepting on Behalf of Hermes BTP: James Coleman, Jr., John Casbon, Board Chairman, J.T. Hannan, Executive Director
Hermes BTP was inspired by civic efforts throughout Southeastern Louisiana in response to Hurrican Katrina. Seeing that there was a gap in support services for area first responders, Hermes BTP was formed with the intent to address this issue. Officially recognized in 2014, Hermes BTP is primarily supported by the 700+ members of the Hermes carnival organization; the oldest active night parade during New Orleans’ Mardi Gras. In addition to supporting first responders, Hermes BTP will also be supporting long term solutions that address our region’s ongoing struggles with violent crime.
We are honored to present to Hermes BTP the Corporate Responsibility Award for enlightened and strategic philanthropy that reflects the mission of the Foundation by advancing the New Orleans Police Department and improving the safety of our community.
Ebbert Award: Sheraton New Orleans Hotel Team

Since the inception of the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation in 1995, the Sheraton New Orleans Hotel has been a strong supporter of our mission to make New Orleans a safer place in which to live, work and visit. Under the leadership of Jim Cook, our strong supporter was transformed into a steadfast partner.
New Orleans is a city of special events. No matter where the event, the men and women of the New Orleans Police Department can always count on Jim and the Sheraton Team to provide refreshments and shelter on long days and nights.
The Team’s dedication goes far beyond events. Sadly, our officers – and their families – sometimes endure great tragedy. During these times of need, Jim and his team stand ready to assist, not only as the Sheraton Team but as individuals.
It is with great pleasure that we honor Jim Cook and the Sheraton Team with the Ebbert Award for taking as a personal cause the pursuit of our mission and the success of the Foundation through a significant contribution of time and exceptional leadership skills.
Badge of Honor Award
Officer Jonathan Burnette, Third District
Officer Burnette was nominated by his fellow officers for the Badge of Honor as a result of his work in NOPD’s Third Police District General Assignment Unit. Before joining the NOPD in 2009, Jonathan Burnette lived in St. Bernard Parish where he was a member of the St. Bernard’s Sherriff’s Office and served as a member of the United States Army. As the son of two police officers, Officer Burnette continues a legacy of service to the community.
Officer Burnette’s valor in pursuing armed suspects during the comission of violent crime reminds us of the very real risks police officers face every day. For his unflinching commitment ot honoring the trust his city has bestowed on him in the face of danger, we award him the Badge of Honor.
Officer Natasha Hunter, Presented Posthumously
Natasha Hunter joined the New Orleans Police Department in 2004, joining other family members who have sworn to protect and serve. Upon graduating from the Police Academy, Officer Hunter was assigned to the Fifth District where she remained for the majority of her law enforcement career.
On June 5, 2016, Officer Hunter was called to the scene of a multi-vehicle accident on Interstate-10 near the Esplanade Avenue off-ramp. While assisting another officer with the scene, even though cruiser lights were flashing and flares had been placed in the roadway, Officer Hunter was struck by a passing motorist. On June 7, 2016, she succumbed to her injuries. Her death is a very real reminder of the dangers police officers encounter everyday.
Today we remember Officer Natasha Hunter, not only for her 12 years of brave and fearless service to our comunity, but as a mother, a sister and a friend.

How much does it cost to attend?
You can purchase an individual seat for a donation of $150. All Top Brass sponsorships include a reserved table of 10 seats. Click here for Top Brass sponsorship levels.
May I request who I sit with?
Yes, Top Brass Sponsor tables seat 10. As a Top Brass Sponsor you tell us who will be seated at your table. If you are buying an individual ticket, you may request a specific seating assignment by October 3rd. We will make every effort to accommodate your request but cannot guarantee to do so.
Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes. Each ticket is valued at $40. Donations above $40 are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
How will my donation be recognized?
Top Brass Sponsors will be recognized throughout the year on the NOPJF website, in the Stake Out for Justice luncheon invitation (pledge received by print deadline), in the Stake Out for Justice luncheon program (pledge received by print deadline), and at the luncheon from the podium and in the video loop.
What exactly is my money going to?
For 21 years, NOPJF has been the sole organization dedicated exclusively to supporting NOPD. Our work is critical, yet simple. We raise the funds necessary to provide our officers the training, equipment and supplies needed to fight crime. With your help, we will continue to protect and serve those who risk their lives every day protecting and serving us.
What kind of “appreciation events” will I be invited to?
Top Brass sponsors will be invited to attend varying V.I. P. experiences. Past appreciation events have included Breakfast with the Chief, private viewing of Special Operations Division demonstrations and equipment, behind the scenes tour of select NOPD facilities, and complimentary services at a luxury spa.
I don’t want to attend but I do want to donate. Is that OK?
Yes. If you are unable to attend but want to make a donation, we encourage you do to so. Unused seats at Stake Out for Justice are filled with officers of the NOPD.
