The New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation proudly supports the Tuition Assistance Program assisting New Orleans Police Officers and civilian employees in furthering their education at the university level. The Foundation recognizes the importance of higher education in the development of the department’s employees and encourages each individual to achieve his or her full personal and professional potential. Since 1999, the program has provided over $545,000 in assistance to NOPD employees seeking to advance their careers through higher education. 

Eligibility and Procedures

Undergraduate: $50 per credit hour with a maximum of 6 hours per the three traditional semesters. Total possible assistance with 6 hours is $300 including books. Must attain at least a grade of C to receive reimbursement.

Graduate: $100 per credit hour with a maximum of 6 hours per the three traditional semesters. Total possible assistance with 6 hours is $600 per the three traditional semesters including books. Must attain at least a grade of B to receive reimbursement.

Procedures

Step 1: The officer or employee will obtain a tuition assistance application from the NOPD Municipal Training Academy by contacting Commander of the Education and Training Division at 504-658-6650. The officer or employee will read the eligibility criteria on the form to ensure eligibility.

Step 2: The officer or employee will complete the application form and sign it, and attach a copy of documentation of the actual amount paid by him/her for tuition and fees. Proof of the course(s) taken, detailed fee bill and the final grade achieved in the class should also be attached. The complete application package should then be delivered or mailed to the Municipal Training Academy.

Step 3: The NOPD Municipal Training Academy will have the responsibility of keeping all records of NOPD officers and employees taking courses, the hourly costs of the courses and the grades received by the employees. The application form will be logged and assigned an application number. This information will then be reviewed by an Academy supervisor and forwarded to the Commander of the Education & Training Division for approval. The NOPD Municipal Training Academy will then be responsible for delivering the original form and attachments to the NOPJF.

Step 4: When the award is ready, it will be mailed to the address on the application unless other instructions are provided.
